Achieving Happiness Through Meditation

Many children learn (either consciously or subconsciously) that happiness is difficult to achieve. They also often learn that one can only be happy when a certain set of external circumstances are met (for example the approval of a friend or parent, or having a certain toy or other item).

Meditation makes you happy!

Meditation makes you happy!

For many people this same mindset carries over strongly into adulthood. Many adults only experience happiness if they own the most stuff, or have the latest ipod or iphone; or eat the right food; or live in the right house; or drive the right car; and so on.

In all cases they have learned that happiness is something external to themselves that can only be achieved by having the right object, doing the right thing or obtaining the approval of someone else.

It is this attitude (at least partly) that is driving Western society’s runaway consumerism (and as a result environmental degradation). It has also ensured that many (if not most) people are unhappy most of the time – for even if you get a new car, happiness is transient and your attention soon moves to the next new thing that you want.

Meditation produces inner happiness

Meditation produces inner happiness

So sooner or later some lucky people ask themselves if there is a better way to be happy that gets you off the consumerism cycle. That doesn’t cost as much. And something that is longer lasting and more satisfying.

Some who ask that question are guided through intuition or coincidence to find some sort of spiritual practice that is more innately satisfying, and that is able to provide the required happiness more frequently, easily and cheaply.

That is where meditation comes in.

At its most basic, meditation is trance. Trance is a state of relaxed awareness that produces certain beneficial brainwave and body changes – as the level of the practitioner increases one can also experience increasing degrees of psychic and spiritual phenomena. And importantly for this article, HAPPINESS!

At one level of understanding, happiness is produced by certain changes in neurotransmitter and neurophysiological activity in the brain. This is the Western way of explaining it.

At another level, however, happiness though meditation is due to coming into closer contact with God, the Source, the Universe, or whatever else you want to call Original Energy.

And not only can you achieve amazing levels of happiness through meditation, it costs nothing, you always have it with you, and you don’t need to seek the approval of anyone other than yourself.

What Are The Best Types Of Psychic Tests?

Summary

There are several types of psychic tests, but only one that is most likely to tell you whether you have psychic abilities or not. You can click this link to see an example of this type of psychic test.

Introduction

Psychic tests can potentially tell you a lot about yourself, especially whether you have psychic abilities or not. But there are different types of tests, with many different potential outcomes and answers. So what is the best type for you?

Psychic tests can unlock your intuition

Psychic tests can unlock your intuition

ESP card decks

Many of the first ESP tests were conducted with a card deck depicting five different symbols (circle, square, triangle, wave and cross). An examiner would draw a sequence of cards at random and aim to transmit the symbol printed on each card to the subject by telepathy.

There are a lot of issues with this test. Firstly, it depended on the setting – often a psychology lab at a university (and therefore very unlike the real world). Secondly, there may have been significant anxiety in the subjects to get things right (again very different to the relaxation that seems to be required for many psychics to be most effective). Thirdly, it depended on how skilled the examiner was at transmitting images of the symbols (conversely the test assumed that a subject could “read” each person equally). And fourthly, this type of test only tested for the presence of telepathy or perhaps clairvoyance – not the other types of psychic ability.

Internet-based psychic tests

There are many similar types of test on the internet. Some use the five classical card symbols; others colors or pictures of places or animals. Another variation is the “what color was the author thinking of when they designed this website?” variety. While these tests may identify some people with psychic gifts, it is probably the minority. Again, it is mainly a test of clairvoyance (if generated by a computer) and possibly telepathy (if asking you to predict what a web designer or author was thinking). It is again also dependent on the skill of the designer at transmitting the information to the participant.

Major drawback of some internet-based psychic tests

Probably most significantly, the fact that many are computer-generated removes that most important factor in any such psychic test – the energy field of the examiner. For some very psychic people this is a major issue, as their main ability is to read the energy fields or auras of others. As this energy field is absent in this type of test, many highly gifted psychics will score poorly on such quizzes and become disheartened or discouraged from practicing and developing their abilities further.

The best type of psychic test

So if the first type of psychic test has so many potential issues, is there a different (and more accurate) way to assess psychic ability over the internet. Yes there is! Essentially it is a multi-question quiz that aims to identify certain traits, abilities and events that might predict whether, and how strong, your psychic ability might be. This type avoids the problems discussed above, while giving you a fairly accurate idea of your level of psychic power. Of course no test is infallible, but by asking a range of questions it increases the accuracy of its interpretation. Follow this link to see an example of this type of psychic test.

What can a psychic test tell you?

In the next article I will discuss each of these in turn. For now I will leave you with a list of questions that online psychic quizzes or tests can answer:
Am I psychic?
Do I have ESP?
Am I clairvoyant?
Am I clairaudient?
Am I clairsentient?
How intuitive am I?
Am I psychokinetic?
Am I a lucid dreamer?
Am I telepathic?

So how do you tell if you have psychic abilities or not? One way is with a psychic abilities quiz. There are two types of quiz. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

The first type involves cards with symbols on them (classically circles, squares etc). Your task to predict which symbol comes next. This type of test has been widely used in esp testing and has been around since the 1970s.

One form of psychic test uses cards with five different symbols.

One form of psychic test uses cards with five different symbols.

The main problem with this test is that it mainly relies on clairvoyance to get a correct answer. Clairvoyance, or “clear seeing” is a classic psychic skill, used by many psychic readers to predict your future. But it is only one of the various types of esp (or extra-sensory perception). The other two main types are clairaudience and clairsentience. Clairaudience (or “clear hearing”) is the ability to receive subtle messages by hearing, while clairsentience (or “clear feeling”) is the ability to connect to others with your feelings.

The second type of test relies on identifying certain personal traits and experiences that might predict the presence of psychic ability. The main disadvantage of this type of test is that some people claim that it is not scientific. And I guess that’s true – it doesn’t give you a definite score or a yes / no answer. But as I see it, psychic abilities are neither black and white, nor can they be adequately assessed by scientific means. So this type of test is a qualitative (as opposed to quantitative) type in scientific jargon. Or in other words, this type of psychic abilities quiz is a right-brained test.

This type has several advantages compared to the classic card-based esp test. Firstly, it can identify a much wider range of psychic ability (depending on the question design) including the “big three” discussed above, but also telekinesis, spiritual guidance, and lucid dreaming. Secondly, it allows for (and even relies on) the fuzziness that exists in the psychic world – the blurring of borders between the presence or absence of psychic abilities. And thirdly, it allows you to measure your progress over time – by taking the same test at various intervals during the development of your psychic skills, you are able to gauge your improvement.

What is Magick?

The ability to think seems to set us apart from other creatures. And although we are concerned with living in the physical world, we are mental beings. The fact is we are thinking all the time. We plan, we dream, we are happy, sad or elated — all of it is thought.

But the universe is mental too, and if we could control our thinking we would see magnificent results in the everyday world. This is the basis of the Law of Attraction.

Many systems have been developed over the ages to help us control our thoughts. Magick (the occult kind, spelled with a ‘k’) is one of the oldest and most general of these systems.

Moon has long been a symbol of occultism and magic. Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/michael_karrer/

The study and application of psychic forces, magick uses mental training, concentration, and a system of symbols to program the mind. Its purpose is to alter the self and the environment according to the will.

Most of the magick we see today comes to us from ancient Egypt and Chaldea. The Chinese, Celts, Hindus, Tibetans and many indigenous peoples also developed their own unique types of magick. We get a hint of these in the practices of tai chi, druidry, yoga, Tibetan Buddhism and shamanism.

Western magick was locked up by the Egyptian priests for thousands of years and then supressed by the rise of Christianity. It was not until medieval Europe that magical knowledge was rediscovered by the alchemists and Cabalists. Only during the past hundred years or so has western culture been open minded enough to permit widespread investigation of the subject. Only since the start of the twentieth century has there been much general interest in it at all

Now, at the start of this second decade of the twenty-first century, magick is once again becoming a major part of public perception and attention. I think this is because all of the traditional energy healing practices use subtle energy in one way or another – magick also uses this subtle energy for the good of all.

Chakra Colours and Flowers

How do you connect chakras (the energy centres of the body in Eastern tradition) and flowers – pretty, ephemeral, bright, cheerful manifestations of nature?

One way is through simple chakra color therapy – an easy way to make yourself feel better and re-energized, even if you don’t really believe in subtle energy or New Age ideas.

Seventh chakra connects us to heaven

Seventh chakra connects us to heaven

There are seven main chakras in a line from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, and a newer one directly above your head. Each one is associated with various areas of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. When the energy flow in one becomes blocked it can result in certain symptoms and vice versa. By keeping the chakras open and the energy flowing, we can maximise our body’s ability to keep well and heal itself.

One way of stimulating energy flow is by simple visualisation. Each chakra has a colour of the spectrum linked to it. Focus on each colour in turn and imagine coloured light pouring into the relevant chakra and saturating it, then visualise the chakra as a spinning disc of colour. Take 2 or 3 deep breaths as you do so. You can also repeat a mantra or affirmation to intensify the positive energy you are creating (see below). Work through each chakra in turn from Root to Soul Star to rebalance your whole energy level.

So what about the flowers? Whatever you use to visualise the colour will work – paint swatches, coloured stones or crystals or an image in your minds eye – but beautiful photographs of flowers saturated in the pure colour of each chakra can bring some extra flower energy into your life as well.

Flowers raise the vibrational energy around them, which is why they have long been associated with celebrations, and bought as presents to new mothers, sick people and loved ones. Weddings and funerals are usually lavished with them. We are rarely aware of  spiritual connections these days – we just know that flowers cheer people up and make them feel glad. So flower photos as visualisation aids make sense and are beautiful to have around.

Here is a basic, brief summary of the chakras and their associated areas and colours (keep in mind that there are whole books written about the chakras, going into far more detail than there is space for here). Using a photo, flower or crystal of the relevant colour, intend energy to flow into each chakra while you focus your mind on it and repeat the mantra.

Chakra meanings and mantras

How To Heal Your Past With Meditation

We all know it is not possible to roll back time or undo or change bad decisions we made in the past, however using meditation we can change the way we feel about the bad things that have happened in the past so that they will stop tormenting us here in the present.

Many of us carry a lot of baggage from the past, (perhaps things like a broken heart, hurt feelings or bad memories of friends or loved ones) – events that may have brought us pain, missed opportunities and wrong choices we made in our lives.

Meditation can help you heal past life trauma

Meditation can help you heal past life trauma

But you cannot allow yourself to let things in the past take over the present. If you take the time to learn how to heal your past with meditation it will enable you to be happy in the present. You may ask how can you do that? Meditation allows you to look at past situations in a new light, and to reach a new understanding of how those events hurt you.

Once you get into a comfortable meditation, think about how you might transform past events into something beneficial (for example, how what you thought was a missed opportunity later opened the door to a brighter future). Meditating about how past events made you feel can help you transform negative memories into more positive ones, as you realise that you know have a choice about your feelings. It can also give you insight about how others who are now in the same situation as you were feel about themselves.

Meditation can make you feel so much more positive and give you a different outlook on life in general, it is something very positive you can do to help yourself.

So you see meditation can be used to turn bad situations into something good or even good situations into something great. Shining the light of new understanding on those events that happened in the past will help you have a feeling of acceptance, peace, and happiness.

Trusting Your Intuition

According to Bob Proctor in the the hit movie The Secret, one of the greatest metaphysical authors of the last 100 years was Thomas Troward (1847-1916). A judge in British-administered India, Troward set out to apply logic and a judicial weighing of evidence to the study of spiritual cause and effect.

The philosopher William James characterized Troward’s Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science as “far and away the ablest statement of philosophy I have met, beautiful in its sustained clearness of thought and style, a really classic statement” (quoted in wikipedia).

Trusting your intuition is an important part of developing your psychic abilities.

Trusting your intuition is an important part of developing your psychic abilities.

One of his Edinburgh lectures included his ideas about intuition. He started off by explaining that, while the subconscious (or as he called it, subjective) mind is open to control by the conscious (or objective) mind, the reverse is also true. He says that “the individual’s subjective mind is pure spirit” and that it can “consequently inform the lower mind of things removed from its ken either by distance or futurity”. In other words, Troward is saying that the subconscious mind, because it is connected to the Source, is sometimes able to access knowledge that is not available to our conscious minds (what we would call clairvoyance).

Troward says that there is “…no limit to the subjective mind’s power of perception, and therefore the question arises, why does it not keep the objective mind continually informed on all points? And the answer is that it would do so if the objective mind were sufficiently trained to recognize the indications given, and to effect this training is one of the purposes of Mental Science”. So in other words he is saying that most of us are too busy to notice what our subconscious mind is trying to tell us.

He also says that “once we recognize the position of the subjective mind as the supporter of the whole individual we cannot doubt that much of what we take to be the spontaneous movement of the objective mind has its origin in the subjective mind prompting the objective mind in the right direction without our being consciously aware of it”. This means that as we come to understand the power and importance of the subconscious mind, we will realize that it is largely responsible for our thoughts, and hence our reality.

He continues by saying “But at times when the urgency of the case seems to demand it, or when, for some reason yet unknown, the objective mind is for a while more closely en rapport (in contact) with the subjective mind, the interior voice is heard strongly and persistently; and when this is the case we do well to pay heed to it”. Here he is saying that many of us, often for unknown reasons (but especially when we need it), experience acloser connection (or gut feeling) that we know comes from inside and contains the truth.

The rest of the lecture is as follows (with my summary at the end):

Bob Proctor in The Secret calls Thomas Troward one of the greatest metaphysical writers of the last century.

Bob Proctor in The Secret calls Thomas Troward one of the greatest metaphysical writers of the last century.

“The importance of understanding and following the intuition cannot be exaggerated, but I candidly admit the great practical difficulty of keeping the happy mean between the disregard of the interior voice and allowing ourselves to be run away with groundless fancies.

The best guide is the knowledge that comes of personal experience which gradually leads to the acquisition of a sort of inward sense of touch that enables us to distinguish the true from the false, and which appears to grow with the sincere desire for truth and with the recognition of the spirit as its source.

The only general principles the writer can deduce from his own experience are that when, in spite of all appearances pointing in the direction of a certain line of conduct, there is still a persistent feeling that it should not be followed, in the majority of instances it will be found that the argument of the objective mind, however correct on the facts objectively known, was deficient from ignorance of facts which could not be objectively known at the time, but which were known to the intuitive faculty.

Another principle is that our very first impression of feeling on any subject is generally correct. Before the objective mind has begun to argue on the subject it is like the surface of a smooth lake which clearly reflects the light from above; but as soon as it begins to argue from outside appearances these also throw their reflections upon its surface, so that the original image becomes blurred and is no longer recognizable.

This first conception is very speedily lost, and it should therefore be carefully observed and registered in the memory with a view to testing the various arguments which will subsequently arise on the objective plane. It is however impossible to reduce so interior an action as that of the intuition to the form of hard and fast rules, and beyond carefully noting particular cases as they occur, probably the best plan for the student will be to include the whole subject of intuition in the general principle of the Law of Attraction, especially if he sees how this law interacts with that personal quality of universal spirit of which we have already spoken.”

Summary

So what this long section is saying goes something like this:

*It is really important to listen to your intuition, but sometimes it can be hard to distinguish true messages from all the crap running through your mind on a daily basis.
*We can learn through experience when to listen to our intuition.
*If your gut-feeling is to follow a certain course of action then you should, regardless of what your head is telling you (in other words, follow your heart).
*First impressions are often the best, but it can be hard to remember what they are once your noisy conscious mind takes over.
*Use the Law of Attraction to improve your intuitive abilities (by desiring and believing it to be so).
